CALGARY - A Calgary police officer has been charged with assault following an alleged incident last December during a traffic stop in the downtown.
The Calgary Police Service said Const. Ian Elsom, 38, a member of the force for less than two years, was charged Tuesday with one count of assault causing bodily harm.
Elsom was on duty when he allegedly assaulted a man who "sustained injuries" to his jaw during a traffic stop in downtown Calgary.
Police would not elaborate on the incident or the extent of the injuries, saying the matter was now before the courts.
Insp. Monty Sparrow of the CPS professional standards section said Elsom is currently on "paid relief" for the next seven days, but that will be reviewed.
After initially investigating the complaint, the file was passed onto the Edmonton prosecutor's office which recommended that charges be laid.
