TORONTO - A Barrie police officer has been cleared of any wrongdoing after a pedestrian was struck and killed by a car being pursued by police.
The Special Investigations Unit says the unnamed officer did not commit a criminal offence while attempting to stop the fleeing car.
Michael O'Keefe, 43, of Barrie, died of his injuries after he was struck by the car in May.
An officer driving a marked cruiser with its emergency lights on pursued the car, but lost sight of the vehicle during the chase.
The pursued vehicle struck O'Keefe, who was crossing a road.
Four SIU investigators probed the circumstances that led to the death, concluding the cruiser never "unduly pushed" the car or "otherwise prevented it from coming to a safe stop."
The SIU is a civilian agency that investigates cases of serious injuries and deaths involving the police and civilians.
