WINNIPEG - A man who played a key role in plans for Winnipeg's first urban reserve has been re-elected grand chief of the Assembly of Manitoba Chiefs.
Ron Evans defeated three other candidates on the first ballot of an election held as part of an assembly meeting on the Brokenhead Ojibwa Nation northeast of Winnipeg. Evans will hold office for another three-year term.
The former chief of the Norway House Cree Nation is promising to continue working on various projects that were started during his first term, including the urban reserve.
The assembly's website says land for what will be known as Governance House has been secured and development is well underway on the project in west Winnipeg.
His opponents included Robert Daniels of the Snow Lake First Nation, Ian Bushie of the Hollow Water First Nation and George Kemp from the Berens River First Nation.
