TORONTO - Canadian television news pioneer and former RTNDA Canada president Ron Laidlaw has died.
Laidlaw passed away Thursday night in London, according to a news release late Friday from RTNDA Canada. He was 88.
Laidlaw served as the organization's second president in 1965-66 and was the first news director of CFPL-TV in London, a position he held from 1953 until his retirement in 1985.
Under his leadership, CFPL became the first station in Canada to establish an hour-long evening newscast and the first to convert to colour.
Ron is survived by his three children. At his request, no funeral service is planned.
Current RTNDA Canada president Cal Johnstone says it's very fitting that the organization's award for continuing coverage is named after Laidlaw.
"His longevity as news director is a metaphor for the importance of sticking with a story," said Johnstone.
