FIELD, B.C. - Rescuers say they have failed to find any sign that a 30-year-old Florida man who went missing on a kayak trip in the Rocky Mountains ever made it to shore.
Parks spokeswoman Tanya Peters says the search of Bow Lake where the man's kayak was found has been called off. Peters says the RCMP are treating the disappearance, which happened during storm, as a missing person's case.
"To try to search the lake at this point is very difficult and would require a lot of manpower," Peters said, noting the lake is deep.
"Unless we have some indication of where it might have happened, it makes it pretty difficult for us to get in there."
Peters said all was clear and sunny when the man took his rented kayak for a trip along the lake in Banff National Park on Saturday evening.
But she said a storm quickly blew through Yoho and Lake Louise, and the man's friends became concerned when he didn't return.
She said staff from the Num Ti Jah Lodge set out to look for the man, and found his kayak overturned near the lake's shore with all his belongings still packed inside.
Wardens from Banff, Lake Louise and Jasper took part in the search, along with RCMP officers, a search and rescue dog from Golden, B.C., two helicopters and staff from the lodge.
