Hillier named as 2008 Vimy Award winner by Conference of Defence Associations

The institute says retired general Rick Hillier made an immense contribution to the country's defence and security.

It says he was the unanimous choice of the panel of judges, which included Supreme Court Chief Justice Beverley McLachlin and Conservative Senator Hugh Segal.

The judges describe Hillier, who stepped down as chief of defence staff in July, as an outstanding leader who constantly reminded the public of the importance and contribution of the Canadian Forces, its members, and their families.

The Vimy Award, which annually recognizes an individual who has made an outstanding contribution to the defence and security of the country, will be presented at a November gala at the Canadian War Museum.

Previous winners include retired generals Lew MacKenzie and Romeo Dallaire and historian and author David Bercuson.
