NIAGARA FALLS, N.Y. - A search is underway on the lower Niagara River for a 12-year-old U.S. girl who apparently slipped off a rock while hiking with a group of teenagers.
U.S. and Canadian Coast Guard boats are in the water and Coast Guard and Border Patrol helicopters have been in the air in search of the girl, who is believed to be from New York City.
Lt. Patrick Moriarty from the New York State Parks Police says the girl was on a sloped rock in the Niagara Gorge below Niagara Falls about 1 p.m. Wednesday when she slipped.
The fast-moving water quickly swept her to the middle of the river where she disappeared.
Dennis O'Connell, Coast Guard officer-in-charge in Youngstown, says searchers will use night-vision equipment to keep searching after dark if necessary.
