QUEBEC - Organizers of a Quebec marathon where a 51-year-old runner died on Sunday say nothing could have been done to prevent his death.
Daniel Porter of Tecumseh, Ont., near Windsor, collapsed just three kilometres from the finish line of the Deux Rives Marathon race. An on-duty physician said Porter probably had a massive heart attack, but an autopsy will determine the exact cause of death.
Porter had run several marathons in the past and went to Quebec City to run the race with his son Jeremy, who competed in the 18-29 category.
Both men ran together for the first part of the race.
Organizers say about 90 of the 6,000 race participants were treated for heat-related injuries, including dehydration and heat exhaustion.
