CALGARY - Calgary fire investigators are trying to determine the cause of a "challenging" fire that destroyed a two-storey building that housed a deli and other businesses.
Fire crews were called at around 3 a.m. by people who noticed thick black smoke coming from the building's windows.
Spokeswoman Deb Bergeson says firefighters on the scene described physically demanding conditions in the cramped, maze-like building.
Bergeson says one person was found inside the building, but it's not known if he needed to be treated by emergency workers.
About two dozen people in a nearby after-hours restaurant were evacuated as a precaution.
Bergeson says about 35 fire personnel responded to fight the blaze in the challenging conditions.
She says the building was erected in the early 1900s, and had the original uninsulated electrical wires.
Preliminary estimates put damages at about $250,000.
