AGASSIZ, B.C. - A head-on collision on a B.C. highway may have been caused by a suicidal man who killed an unsuspecting driver as he took his own life, the RCMP said Monday.
Gerald Guliker, 44, of Chilliwack was the only person in a vehicle that crossed into oncoming traffic in the Fraser Valley town of Agassiz on Sunday. Guliker and the driver of an oncoming vehicle died at the scene, and three passengers in the other vehicle, including a child, were injured.
"Due to his state of mind at the time, there is a possibility that he did cross the centre line intentionally to take his own life, and he did, unfortunately, take someone else with him," said Const. Lea-Anne Dunlop of the RCMP.
"It's really a tragic situation on both sides - two families are grieving."
Police were already looking for Guliker after he called them earlier in the day and said he was heading to Hope, B.C., to kill himself.
A family member also called police, saying Guliker was suicidal and to report a breach of bail conditions stemming from an incident last month that led to charges of uttering threats.
Officers showed up to speak with Guliker, but he had already left.
When police spotted Guliker talking to another man on the side of the highway, less than two kilometres from the crash site, he drove away
The officers drove in the same direction, but did not pursue Guliker or attempt to pull him over.
"At no point did we engage in a pursuit as far as lights and sirens - we didn't want to escalate the situation," said Dunlop.
"But we were in the process of trying to locate Mr. Guliker and speak with him to deal with his own personal safety."
Police haven't released the name of the victim.
